In the summer, the Swiss electorate rejected the revised CO2 Act after years of work. Now, the Federal Council is trying again. As announced, it does not want to introduce new charges and the CO2 charge on fossil fuels such as oil and gas is to remain at 120 francs per tonne of CO2. What is new is that almost half of the revenue from that charge is to be invested in climate protection. The other half is to be reinvested in the public and the economy. The Federal Council also intends to invest in more charging points for electric cars. Fees due from car importers who fail to meet CO2 requirements are to be used for that investment. Around 210 million francs in total are to be invested in expanding the charging network.
